San Roman Bodegas y Vinedos, Prima, Toro 2017
85%Tinta de Toro (aka – Tempranillo), 15% Garnacha.
This wine comes from 15-50 year old vines at fairly high elevation in sandy and rocky soils. Organic and some biodynamic farming practices are employed. It’s hand harvested, fermented with native yeast, aged for 12 months in a combination of used French and American oak barrels and large foudre. Maurodos owns 55 hectares in the villages of Villaester and San Roman de Hornija, planted mainly with Tinta de Toro, the local clone of Tempranillo. Toro has adapted to the local climate by growing smaller berries which in turn lead to deeper color and intense structure than typical of Tempranillo. This wine has notes of ripe cherry, boysenberry, cola, licorice, allspice, violet and taught tannins. It’s a great substitute for cabernet drinkers.
