Remhoogte, Vantage 2018
Stellenbosch, South Africa
Pinotage is South Africa’s signature red grape, a cross of pinot noir and cinsault that was created nearly a century ago. It has often been derided for producing lackluster wines but that has less to do with the grape itself than the places it has been planted and how it has been treated. Remhoogte is a small family-owned estate winery on the foothills of the Simonsberg mountains. The vineyards are cooled by sea breezes and selectively picked and sorted for optimal ripeness. The wine is fermented in stainless steel, then it spends two years in oak to soften and round out, providing aromas of violets and fresh raspberries with spicy-savory-earthy undertones.
