Catherine & Pierre Breton, la Dilettante, Vouvray Sec, Chenin Blanc 2016
Vouvray, Loire, France
100% Chenin Blanc
This is dryer style Vouvray than you may be familiar with. While being high acid and mineral-driven, this vintage is a little restrained and delicate by comparison to other years. It is still lively, light, and juicy - making it a great food pairing.
The grapes come from 40-year-old vines grown on sandy-silica-clay soils on Catherine's parents' land. The wine is aged in small old oak barrels for 8 months.
The Bretons pioneers of the natural wine movement - organically certified and farming biodynamically very low yield vineyards despite the challenges of such farming so far north in the Loire, spontaneously fermenting with native yeasts, minimal temperature control, only adding a minuscule amount of sulfur when needed, minimal filtering and no fining, etc. Most of the reds are made by Pierre but Catherine makes this Vouvray and small range under the Dilettante ("the dabbler") label and their daughter, France, and son, Paul, have shown particular interest in the whites as they become more involved in the winery.
