Domaine De Majas Rouge 2017
Côtes de Catalanes, Languedoc-Roussillon
50/50 Carignan, Grenache
When Agnès and Alain Carrere took over the small domaine it was making pretty boring wines. They also wound up taking over Alain’s father’s vines and found themselves with a glut of juice. Most of the wine in the region is sold to co-ops, and when that wasn’t worth it financially, they decided to sell all their grapes to a grocery chain who dictated a bland wine with mass appeal. Eventually, that bulk price wasn’t paying the bills either and they decided to refocus. They converted to organic farming, reduced the amount of sulfur used in the wine and on the vines and eliminated the use of commercial yeast after meeting Tom Lubbe, a respected natural winemaker at nearby Domaine Mattassa. This wine comes from clay and limestone soils and 20 to 120 year old vines, fermented and aged in concrete.
