Michael Shaps, Petit Mensang 2017
Petit Mensang may be best known for making dessert wines in the Jurançon region of France where its high acidity balances the sweetness, however, this is made in the style of dry table wine. It's the heaviest white wine Michael Shaps makes, pairing well with heavy shellfish and chicken dishes. It has honey and grapefruit on the nose, and almond, tropical fruit, and spice on the palate, with a creamy texture balanced by racy acidity.
This is an award winning wine from one of Virginia's most important winemakers. Michael studied oenology and viticulture in Burgundy, France in the early 90s. In 1995 Michael moved to Virginia to work at Jefferson Vineyards as head winemaker and general manager, and started making wines under his own moniker 6 years later. He started Virginia Wineworks in 2007 for his own brands and contract work.
